An impacted tooth is one that cannot erupt normally into its proper position due to limited space, an abnormal angle, or obstruction. Wisdom teeth are commonly impacted, but other teeth can also be affected. Depending on its position and condition, treatment may or may not be required.

What Is an Impacted Tooth?

An impacted tooth remains partially or completely trapped under the gum or bone instead of erupting normally. It may grow at an unusual angle and sometimes press against nearby teeth. This can make cleaning difficult and increase the risk of pain, infection, or tooth decay.

Why Does a Tooth Become Impacted?

Common causes include:

  • Lack of space in the jaw
  • Crowding of teeth
  • Abnormal tooth position
  • Delayed eruption
  • Obstruction by another tooth
  • Jaw or developmental factors

When Does an Impacted Tooth Need Removal?

Not every impacted tooth needs removal. A dentist or Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon may recommend removal if there is:

  • Repeated pain or swelling
  • Infection around the tooth
  • Damage to nearby teeth
  • Difficulty maintaining oral hygiene
  • Food getting trapped frequently
  • Cyst or other dental complications
  • The decision depends on the tooth’s position, symptoms, and potential risks.

Does Impacted Tooth Removal Require Surgery?

Not always. A partially erupted tooth may sometimes be removed through a simple extraction. However, a deeply impacted tooth may require surgical removal. Dental X-rays or other imaging can help determine the appropriate treatment.

What Happens After Removal?

Mild swelling, tenderness, or discomfort may occur after the procedure. Patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions, take prescribed medicines, maintain oral hygiene, and prefer soft foods during the initial recovery period.

When Should You See a Specialist?

If you experience recurring tooth pain, swelling, gum infection, difficulty opening your mouth, or food frequently getting trapped around a tooth, consult an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Timely evaluation can help prevent complications and determine whether an impacted tooth needs monitoring or removal.
